NB NEWS - The 1500 Shape Debate

Alot has been written, examined and visually/physically modeled recently, in the wake of the colossally common and yet diligently appreciated M1500's 'shape' over the past few years. The shape I'm referring to is in regards to the toe box and sole unit and has attracted the opinions of many a sneaker aficionado (or NB nut). While the perfectionists are unimpressed yet wholly accepting of the differences, however subtle, I recently came across a comment and segment of credible New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. technical correspondence and it spills the beans. Reason for the deviation and 'strengthening' of shape and the impact of the new sole units on the Flimby 1500.

..the most significant change to the shoe has been the toe puff. The original toe puff was a hot melt adhesive type and this would leave the shoes looking rather flat in the toe area. We no longer use this type of toe puff in the factory and have transferred to a Forestick Thermoplastic toe puff. This type of toe puff stands up a lot better and holds the shape at the toe after the upper has been slipped from the last. This type of toe puff material is now used on all our cut to box production.
Some time ago NB Japan made the decision to re-develop the M1500 sole. This decision came on the back of the sole manufacturer informing NB Japan that the moulds were no longer suitable to produce soles from. NB Japan made the decision to re-develop the sole to make it a better fit to the SL-1 last. The revised sole has a slightly different look to it compared to the original. The toe of the new sole has a fair amount of spring at the toe where the original sole seems to look a lot flatter. There is no doubt that this revised sole unit does change the appearance of the M1500 compared to the original."
Personally, I've noticed the more stubborn and firm toefront (where the sole lip meets the suede tobox) even on my recent pair of M577GNA's from last season - Its use is factory wide and while maybe not best to tinker with the highly regarded 1500 at first, its introduction and use across the lines will hopefully produce an increased output from Flimby with the Union Jack continuing to grace the finest grey suede in trainers.

Since my early teens, I was captivated by the old-school hoops tales and more so, the kicks that propelled them to those dizzying heights. Reebok, the main instigator of plus sized comfort that coalesced with ridiculously innovative technology to go along with the technical boot silhouette, have had a renaissance of late. With the burgeoning sneaker market booming and the desire for past grails at boiling point, Reebok have become just as popular along with the likes of Nike and Adidas and their respective depths of reproduction foundries that it has reclaimed that symptomatic attitude and sheen of those all-conquering 'Pump' tales of accomplishment and gloss that were so popular back in the day.

Personally, I've owned a pair of pumps since '06 and they have slowly been gathering colour in my closet. In its place, my everyday beater evolved from a humble nike to the running ethic of Reebok - a side that I was unfamiliar with, leaving the pump in its accumulative dust, I ventured down the route of Reebok Runners and their respective aura. Purchasing a reebok ERS 2000 Runner in late 07, its been with me ever since, on my feet right now, with a timeless 'runners' hallmark colourway of eggplant and laser blue, they have, and continue to, serve my feet well. Hence, giving this glowing account, I feel it necessary to explore the adventures of Reebok running and all its glory.

This Creative Duo run agency of the sydney locale have been a personal favorite of mine, completing niche-innovative and highly resolved projects for their clients, their websites on which I have an interaction with quite regularly, serve as a constant reminder of their skill in execution but more-so concept and visualization with a form of light-filled, quirky minimalism focusing on the typography broadsheet. They're low-key creative geniuses in my POV.

Now that I have gotten the official Poster for the PUMP20 collection...

British interweb merchants, Hanon give us a sneak peak at their version of a tonal grey rendition with hits of red and a digital square pattern. A solid colourway, but I'm still waiting for something better from at least a few of the other shops that haven't leaked their collaborations yet.

The official unveiling of all designs will be on the eve of release, the 19th of this month where all collaborations will be previewed with detail.

Boston's Bodega sneaker stoop produces an all weather- combat boot for their urban jungle design of Reebok's Pump. Sporting all the goods to protect yourself from city street grime and lacquer, the Bodega packaging is sublime in theming itself this time, the "Outback" Pump.

More: The military inspired “Outback” is made up of soft nubuck leather contrasted by canvas and subtle reflective materials. Lots of small details such as trek laces, a mesh tongue, and dog/hang tags are featured on the shoe. As with the other releases in this campaign, the sneakers are individually numbered and limited to 31 pairs. To further accentuate the uniqueness of this release, each shoe is packaged in military spec ammo cases and comes with a collaborative t-shirt.

Next up is a little unflattering domain of French chic LaMJC by the Colette store, Paris.
In an aesthetic reminiscent of Japanese designs of recent (the Adidas AZX design by VA), The french idea I believe, is poorly materialized into the wrong collaboration. But considering the number of stores, I guess someone had to do the whole thing in fabrique a la sweatpants. The splatter pattern is the only bonus amongst the massive Pump tongue adorned in the comforting fabric. Something unique about that.

Before I try my hand at my own Shoes Today experiment, I thought I'd Blog a series of upcoming sneaker releases.
With Big news that Reebok is celebrating its 20th anniversary of the genius PUMP technology, something that for history's sake was larger than Nike itself at inception, It comes by no surprise celebrations will take the form of numerous name Sneaker stores around the globe taking part in a collaborative design process, The Pump20 collection. To commend Reebok and the PUMP technology all in one, the PUMP Bringback retro will be repackaged with unique colour-ways designed by stores that not only include Australia's own sydney side Espionage but personal favorites, HUF, Solebox, SeakersNStuff and AlifeRivingitionClub (to name a few).

Here's a Quick look at the retro model in its OG CW (also to be released).
